Saruman, once leader of the Council of the Wise and titular head of the White Council, allowed himself to be corrupted by the persuasive powers of the Dark Lord, gazing jealously at the Palantir of Orthank. In doing so, he embarked on a path that stripped him of his nobility and turned him into a treacherous parody of the true Istari. Aligned, he turned his prodigious intellect to building an army to rival that of the Dark Lord. What Saruman sought to gain from his treachery is shrouded in mystery, but he nevertheless used his magical knowledge against his old friend, Gandalf the Grey, and condemned thousands to death by fire and sword as his legions invaded Rohan.

Gríma is a man from Rohan who willingly sold his services to Saruman in exchange for promises of wealth and power, a despicable act that resulted in him being placed in the service of King Théoden, where he could do the most damage. When Rohan most needed heroic leadership, Gríma's advice was words of despair. So it came to pass that the highly promising ruler was robbed of the will to act, sitting idly by, oblivious to the fact that Westfold was on fire. Though not a warrior, Gríma's strength lies in his ability to distort the words and thoughts of those around him, robbing even the wise of their heroism.
