While many of the elves of Eriador settled in one of the many havens, Gildor Inglorion chose to make his home in the wild lands of the north. Since these lands are no longer as safe as they once were, Gildor has made it his duty to keep an eye on travelers in these lands to bring them to safety. Gildor's gift is perfectly suited to this task - he and his kin are quick on their feet, fast enough to keep pace with horsemen over short distances.
Glorfindel is arguably the greatest warrior in Rivendell, and his skill and speed with a blade is unmatched by any Elf in the Third Age, including Lord Elrond. Even the fearsome Nazgûls back away from the mighty Elven ruler and dare not face him openly, deciding to challenge him when all nine unite as one under the command of the Nazgûl King.
Frodo and his companions from The Hobbit met both of these powerful Elven heroes on their journey to Rivendell. Glorfindel rode on top of Asfaloth with great haste from the Last House to help Aragorn lead the hobbits to safety, so he is depicted in light traveling clothes rather than full armor.
