Training Crossbowmen is far less demanding than their more archaically armed counterparts. However, the crossbow as a weapon is expensive to produce and difficult to maintain, especially under battlefield conditions. Even poorly trained Crossbowmen can accurately shoot and pierce thick armour, in addition in the face of a threatening charge by enemy cavalry. But of course, any sober Lannister commander will keep them out of close combat as much as possible!
