White bears from the depths of the lands beyond the Wall are extremely powerful, even compared to the most formidable specimens of the bear species. Standing, they reach the height of two men, and their monstrous strength enables them to crush rocks and tear steel. Only the Wildlings could have come up with such a crazy idea to tame these beasts and move into battle on their backs. As "cavalry" the Bear Riders of the Frosty Shore are quite slow and sluggish. But while on horseback you can at most trample your opponent, a bear can also bite, tear and crush - even a man in full plate armor is just a plaything for him.
